Cheese Celebration Cakes
Wedding season is well and truly upon us. We are currently experiencing a boom in cheese wedding cakes with bride and grooms increasingly choosing a savoury offering as opposed to the traditional sweet tiered cake.
But these aren’t just for weddings and in our opinion any celebration calls for cheese!
So why choose a cheese celebration cake and which cheeses to choose? Here we explore the reasons to opt for a cheese celebration cake as well as offer our favourite cheese suggestions. Enjoy!
4 Reasons to Choose a Celebration Cheese Cake
1 – it can be cheaper
There are so many cheeses available that odds are there will be some to fit your budget. As we are a wholesaler we are able to sell our cheeses cheaper than most cheese specialist shops and supermarkets. The cheeses also require very little decoration and in fact most benefit from being simply displayed with all their natural glory – rinds and all!
2 – doubles up as evening food
A cheese wedding cake plus a selection of fruit and crackers and there’s your evening food! Much more relaxed than a sit down dinner and cheese is perfect for nibbling on into the night.
3 – less prone to accidental damage
A traditional tiered cake is extremely fragile both during transportation to a venue and tampering throughout the day and night. Cheese wedding cakes are fairly robust and, excluding soft cheeses (caution needed!), can withstand transportation and setting up with ease.
4 – it’s cheese!
Does this one need any more explaining!? Make sure to include a traditional favourite cheese such as Cheddar and everyone will be happy. You may also discover a new cheese you hadn’t tried before. All of our cheeses are available in smaller retail sizes so you can try before you buy.
Cheese Options
The options are limitless when it comes to cheese but in our experience most people want something safe like a Cheddar, a blue cheese, a soft cheese like a Brie and something a little different. The cheeses on this example are (from the bottom):
Cornish Yarg – The Yarg is made by Lynher Dairies in Cornwall. It is a light and mellow cheese with a firm texture and mushroomy flavour. It is wrapped in nettle leaves which help to retain the texture and create an attractive rind on the cheese.
Blue Stilton – This Stilton is from Tuxford & Tebbutt Creamery. It is rich and complex with a crumbly texture.
Sharpham Brie – Made by Sharpham Cheese on the banks of the River Dart this brie is creamy and buttery in flavour with a delightfully smooth texture.
Keltic Gold – The Keltic Gold is from Whalesborough Cheese in Cornwall. It is similar to an Alpine style cheese and is dipped in local cider resulting in a slightly sweeter flavour.
Godminster Vintage Heart Shaped Cheddar – A strong, vintage cheddar encased in wax and shaped in a heart – the perfect topper for a wedding cheese cake!
Other Options
This cheese cake also features a traditional cutting pie because, why not! Incorporating other elements into a cheese celebration cake is easy and again adds to the general aesthetic as well as complementing the cheeses. The cutting pies are available in pork, cheese and pickle, pork & apple and turkey & cranberry varieties.
Here are some other cheeses which we recommend using for cheese celebration cakes:
Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar
Quicke’s Mature Cheddar
Cornish Garlic Yarg
Wensleydale & Cranberry
Curworthy Devon Oke
Devon Blue
Smoked Cheddar
Ticklemore Goat
There are plenty of other cheeses available and if there is a particular cheese you love that we don’t currently stock, odds are we can source it for you. Check out our full range of cheeses here.
