4 Excellent Cheese & Cider Pairings

Cheese & Cider pairings

You already know that we stock lots of locally sourced cheeses but did you know that we also stock local cider?

As the saying goes what grows together goes together and this certainly rings true for cider and cheese. Here we’re pairing our Sandford Orchard ciders with some delicious local cheeses from around the South West.

Devon Red and Quicke’s Smoked Cheddar

Starting with a classic. The Sandford Orchard Devon Red is a refreshing medium/dry cider that takes its name from the rich red soil that gives the orchards their distinctive quality. It is bittersweet and slightly tangy with a strong  apple aroma. We’ve paired this cider with the Quicke’s Smoked Cheddar. The cheese is rich and buttery with strong smoky flavours which cuts through the acidity of the cider. Perfect to enjoy on a warm summers evening.

Devon Mist and Ticklemore Goat

The Devon Mist is a personal favourite. It is a cloudy medium cider with delicious fruity flavours without being overly sweet. We played around with this one and thought the burst of fruitiness lends itself well to the creamy, citrus and herby flavours of the Ticklemore. This goats cheese is mellow and gentle but with complex undertones which perfectly compliments the beautiful flavour of the cider.

Rib Tickler – Cornish Blue

The Rib Tickler was created in partnership with The Rugby Players Association with all proceeds donated to The Exeter Chiefs Foundation and Wooden Spoon. This cider is crisp and fruity edging towards the sweeter side of the scale. We are focusing on complimenting the sweetness here with our pairing of Cornish Blue. The Cornish Blue is mild and creamy with a buttery rich flavour which cuts through the sweeter notes in the cider.

Fanny’s Bramble – Sharpham Brie

We couldn’t resist including a flavoured cider in our round up! The Fanny’s Bramble is named after Fanny’s Lane in the village of Sandford whose hedgerows in the late summer are packed with blackberries. Again this is on the sweeter side of the scale which pairs extremely well with the dense creaminess of a perfectly ripe Brie. The Sharpham Brie is deliciously more-ish and savoury with mushroom and chicory notes while the Fanny’s Bramble is bursting with the sweet tart blackberries and crisp apple cider.

These ciders are all available in individual 500ml bottles as well as cases of 12x500ml.

The cheeses are all available in individual retail packs as well as catering blocks.

We are proud to support a number of local suppliers and their delicious produce in everything from cheese and cider to rum, meats and deli products.
