CURWORTHY CHEESE

Cuworthy

Curworthy Cheese have been producing their artisan cheeses by hand for the last 25 years, from their Farm at Stockbeare near Okehampton. THEY STILL USE A TRADITIONAL OLD CHEESE PRESS.

Richard Drake is the main man in charge of the cheese making now, his Mother in Law Rachel still involved and where the cheesemaking begun more than 30 years go, Rachel and her then Husband arrived in Devon in 1979.
Their passion for producing delicious, quality cheese is very evident their small team working hard to sustain the high quality of their artisan cheese range.

Although the cows are not directly on their farm the milk is sourced locally from a neighbouring farm.

We have visited Curworthy many years ago but have recently been to see Richard and had an extensive tour and background on the making of their cheeses and processes involved.

We always enjoy meeting our local producers and seeing behind the scenes the hard work and passion that goes into producing their products.

As pictured below we saw a batch of the Haytor sitting in salty brine, they will stay there for 48 hours being turned over by hand after 24 hours.

Once on the shelf they are then turned weekly.
The Haytor is a sweet nutty gruyere style cheese.

Haytor actually won ‘Best in Show Dairy Produce’ at the Devon County Show this year, an incredible achievement and accolade for Richard and the team at Curworthy Cheese!

The maturing room was really interesting, seeing the difference in the freshly produced cheese to the ones that have been maturing on the shelves for weeks.

Once ready the waxing commences, alot of skill goes into waxing their cheeses giving a distinct finish.
